Reserved before we had the chance to advertise it, an extremely special Patek Philippe Aquanaut reference 5066A-001.

As our followers and clients likely know by now, we are tremendously fond of these early Aquanaut references - and particularly the 5066A. Yet this example is most definitely our favourite to pass through our hands thus far. Dating to 1999 and sold in 2001, this very early example is a tritium configuration and, remarkably, retains both its original tritium dial and matching tritium hands. Usually, much like our recently-sold 5066J, these early Aquanauts retain their original tritium dials while the hands are replaced during servicing at Patek Philippe over the years. To find an example where both remain together - ageing consistently and honestly over the past quarter-century - is exceptionally uncommon.

The result is simply beautiful. The luminous markers and hands have developed to a rich creamy tone throughout, giving the watch a warmth and character entirely absent from later Super-LumiNova examples. We felt the watch paired perfectly with this beige Aquanaut strap from the manufacturer, beautifully complementing the aged tritium and softening the steel case in a way that feels almost vintage military in character. Part of the enduring charm of the early Aquanaut lies in exactly this versatility. While originally delivered on black tropical straps, the reference works wonderfully across an array of colours offered by the manufacture today, completely transforming the personality of the watch each time.

This particular example was accompanied by its full set of accessories from new and retained a beautifully sharp case throughout - exactly the sort of detail one hopes to see on a collector-grade early Aquanaut. A true time-capsule Aquanaut, and one which lasted less than a day within our hands before being secured by its new custodian. One we will certainly miss.
