As a reference, the 18038 marks a pivotal moment in the Day-Date lineage - the first generation to introduce the sapphire crystal and the upgraded calibre 3055, bringing both improved reliability and a subtly more modern presence while still retaining all the warmth and charm of the four-digit Presidents. Its factory blue sunburst dial is both beautiful and seldom seen, paired with brilliant-cut diamond hour markers and two baguette-cut diamond hour markers at 6 and 9 o’clock. The tritium plots have aged to a rich, creamy tone, matching the hands perfectly and adding a subtle warmth to the dial’s already striking presence. You also get a charming Spanish day wheel, giving the watch a little extra personality and period flavour.
