Now available, a Rolex Chronograph “Pre-Daytona” in stainless steel, reference 6238.

Produced between the early 1960s and 1967, the reference 6238 represents the final evolution of Rolex’s classical chronograph line before the introduction of the Cosmograph Daytona. Nicknamed the “Pre-Daytona” by collectors, the model is defined by its clean, elegant aesthetic - a smooth polished bezel, pump pushers, and a silvered sunburst dial with applied indices, giving it a far more understated presence compared to the racing-inspired Daytona that would follow.

Powered by the manual-winding Valjoux 72B calibre, the 6238 carries all the hallmarks of Rolex’s mid-century chronographs, yet today stands apart as an important transitional reference. With fewer than 4,000 pieces thought to have been produced across all metals and dial configurations, examples remain scarce, particularly in such well-preserved condition as this one is.

This example, dating to the mid-1960s, carries a special detail that sets it apart: a period caseback engraving reading “To Bill …in friendship, Dick Matt, 12-25-66.” That Christmas Day dedication not only anchors the watch firmly in time, but also enriches its provenance - offering a glimpse into the human stories that these watches have witnessed.

The watch offered here is a particularly fine example, with crisp case proportions, thick lugs, and a wonderfully intact dial that highlights the timeless, almost dressy quality of the reference. For collectors, the 6238 is the essential link between Rolex’s early tool chronographs and the modern Daytona icon - a piece of true historical significance.

Coming as a watch-only and without its original bracelet, but in truly remarkable condition for its age, the watch is available for viewing in London and purchase worldwide. Please get in touch for further information.
