Patek Philippe Nautilus
3800/1J
£62,500
Now available, a Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 3800 in yellow gold with the seldom-seen “doré” dial and contrasting black date window.
Introduced in 1981, the 3800 was the first mid-sized Nautilus, created in response to demand for a more versatile and wearable interpretation of Gérald Genta’s original 3700. At 37.5mm, it carried forward the design language that defined the Nautilus - the porthole case, horizontal ribbing and integrated bracelet - while introducing the in-house calibre 335 SC, bringing a central seconds to the model for the first time. Over its two-decade production run, the 3800 would evolve into an icon of its own, representing the refinement of the Nautilus concept in an era when precious metals were once again favoured over steel.
This particular example, manufactured in 1988 and sold in March 1989, stands out for its exceptional condition and rarely encountered “doré” dial - a tone that perfectly complements the yellow gold case and bracelet, and the contrasting black date aperture adds balance and visual depth. The bracelet shows minimal stretch and remains fully linked, while the original dial and hands are perfectly preserved, their gentle patina only enhancing the watch’s depth and character.
Accompanied by its Extract from the Archives, this 3800/1J represents one of the most charming expressions of the mid-size Nautilus - a reference once overlooked, now celebrated by collectors for its balance, proportion, and quiet elegance. The watch is available for viewing in London and purchase worldwide. Please get in touch for further information.
