An often-overlooked reference within the wider world of modern Patek Philippe collecting, the 5098 quietly represents some of the manufacture’s very best dress watch design of the early 2000s. Inspired heavily by the shaped wristwatches of the Art Deco era, the Gondolo line has always celebrated form and elegance above all else - and the 5098 does so beautifully.

The curved tonneau-shaped rose gold case is simply exquisite on the wrist, with proportions and ergonomics that are difficult to appreciate until worn. Slim, elegant and incredibly comfortable, it wears with a softness and fluidity that feels entirely unique compared to more traditional round Calatrava references.

The dial itself is a true horological work of art. Multi-sector guilloché finishing flows throughout the silvered surface, creating remarkable depth and texture beneath the painted Breguet-style numerals and warm rose gold chapter ring. Every section of the dial catches light differently, showcasing the level of craftsmanship that made references such as this so special during this period of Patek Philippe production.

Powering the watch is the manually-wound calibre 25-21 REC, with “REC” standing for “rectangulaire”. Developed specifically for the Gondolo’s Art Deco-inspired tonneau case, it marked the first simple shaped movement produced by Patek Philippe designed to mirror the form of its housing since the manufacture’s celebrated rectangular and tonneau calibres of the 1930s and 1940s - a hugely important detail, and one that perfectly demonstrates the seriousness with which Patek approached the Gondolo line.

This particular watch-only example presents in truly exceptional overall condition throughout, showing little to no signs of wear. The case retains razor-sharp hallmarks to the rear, further highlighting just how carefully preserved the watch has remained over the years. A wonderfully elegant and increasingly obscure modern Patek Philippe that offers enormous charm away from the more obvious references.
