Few references encapsulate the spirit of the modern Patek Philippe quite like the 5164A. Combining the effortless wearability of the Aquanaut with the practicality of the ingenious Travel Time complication, it has become one of the defining travel watches of the last two decades. Yet, hidden within the final production run lies a subtle evolution that many collectors overlook.

This late 2023 example belongs to the very last generation produced before the reference's discontinuation and, crucially, is powered by Patek Philippe's upgraded calibre 26-330 S C FUS, replacing the long-serving calibre 324. Together with the revised folding clasp, introduced shortly before production ceased, these details make it the definitive 5164A and unquestionably the version we would choose. Small changes on paper perhaps, but the kind that matter enormously to those who appreciate the subtle evolution of a reference.

Presented in exceptional overall condition, the watch remains unpolished, showing remarkably little evidence of wear, and is offered as a true complete set with its entirety of accessories from new. While supplied with its original black composite strap, we have chosen to photograph it on the beautiful blue-grey strap from the white gold 5164G - a combination that perfectly complements the steel case and gives the watch an altogether different character.

For many, the 5164A has always represented the perfect balance within the Aquanaut collection: practical, understated and effortlessly wearable. To find one from the very end of production with both the upgraded movement and revised clasp is becoming increasingly difficult, making this an especially compelling example.
